The Hughes House, Winchester
Designing an subterranean house
This is an unusual underground house set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) near Winchester. The concept is to maintain the view over the building with a lawn roof.
The building has a shallow form facing south which maximises solar gain in Autumn and Spring, whilst the deep brise soliel moderates excessive solar gain during Summer months. It has a high thermal mass, which creates a cool summer environment which is combined with a thermally efficient building envelope which therefore requires very little energy input to maintain excellent temperatures throughout the year.
